We chatted with our wine maker – Neil Marais – to get an insight into what he loves about working at Dunstone and what makes our wines and the winery so unique.
Neil Marais
Neil has been with us for past 6 years, and has since helped establish Dunstone as an award winning winery. Growing up in a Roberston, Neil’s family were involved the restaurant and hospitality industry. It was through their family run restaurant that Neil was introduced to wine and, after exploring the wine making process, Neil realised he had found his passion.
“I love being a part of Dunstone and growing this boutique winery. Using traditional wine making methods, I get to be apart of the entire process: from planting and harvesting, to barrelling, bottling and labelling, which is all done on this estate.”
Our Wines
Dunstone offer single vineyard wines which are largely terroir driven. These include Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Shiraz Rose. We are very proud to say that we have won numerous international and local wine awards, consecutively for the past 4 years: These include John Platter and Michelangelo awards for our Shiraz and Merlot.
“I prefer red wine and reds just suit Wellington.”
With our newly planted Granache and Mouvedre vines, a blended Dunstone Red is also in the foreseeable future, as soon as these vines are ready for harvest.
Harvest Time
Harvest is an exciting time of year for us, as the entire Dunstone family comes together to help out, with many guests getting involved and getting their hands (and feet) dirty too. It’s hard work but absolutely worth it and something everyone looks forward to. Our cellar is based within our bistro, allowing guests to watch or help with the harvesting process, whilst enjoying a marvellous lunch.
You are welcome to join us, during February and March, and be apart of the harvest festivities.
